Wednesbury opens a new £8.1 million leisure centre

This new center with state-of-the-art facilities, such as a 25-metre pool, learner pool, two dance studios, a 100-station fitness suite and a new sports hall, is another reason for our estate agents in Wednesbury to recommend this area as a place to live.

The construction of this leisure centre started in 2013, as a replacement for the old one. The new modern-looking building was designed by Sandwell Council’s in-house architects.

According to Councilor Steve Eling, who declared it officially opened in December 2015, the Wednesbury leisure centre will be “a superb new development which will bring such top class facilities for the people of Wednesbury and the rest of Sandwell”. Allowing residents in Wednesbury and surrounding areas to keep fit and enjoy sport is a definitely a priority for the Council.

Indeed, there are over 1,800 members who will be enjoying the new sports hall, the swimming pools, gym and spin studio. The leisure centre, run by Sandwell Leisure Trust (SLT), offers a great variety of fitness classes, numbering over 130. Also, new customers can enjoy a special offer until the end of December, the details of which can be found on the official website.

Last September, Sandwell Council announced that the sports centre would be named after Joel Richards, as a fitting tribute to the local football referee who was involved in many sporting activities in his home town before he sadly died in the Tunisia attacks. His brother unveiled the plaque naming the sports hall in his honour.

With the continuing rise of sports in Wednesbury, there are other projects to promote it in the local area. One such project is called Wednesbury Sport Activators, which is funded by the National Lottery and helps local people over 25 to participate in sport by organizing a lot of activities for them. Another organization is Wednesbury Sports Union, a coalition of sports clubs for football, cricket, hockey and tennis, coming together to provide mutual support for all athletics.

There is surely no doubt then that sports lovers will find Wednesbury a great place to live due to the abundance of sport facilities, clubs and activities for adults and children to take part in.
